SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is a flagship hospital for Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) and regional referral center for the 16 county southern Illinois region. With 154 beds, SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is Southern Illinois’ largest and most spacious birthing center with Level 2 Plus Special Care Nursery, and it is the only dedicated pediatric unit in the region. We met with Sushmita Shankar, Drug Diversion Specialist at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale since 2017 who shared her experiences of using WasteLog™.
Previously, SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale used an outside laboratory for their screening of narcotic waste. It was challenging to safeguard the chain of custody, it incurred great costs, and it took a long time to get the test results. Every time suspected samples were analyzed staff were sent home until the results came back.
Finally, we realized that we needed to look at alternative solutions available on the market to control everything in-house. This is where WasteLog™ came into the picture
Since they implemented WasteLog™ there is no hesitancy in testing and no need to send the samples out anymore. They can do more testing in-house and they get the results immediately. When the results are clear, the staff can go back to work right away.
