Back to normal. Well, almost...

In early 2022, after two years of challenges due to COVID-19, Pharmacolog has begun to return to some sort of normality. It is with great joy we can meet in person again and conduct business the way we used to. However, new clouds have gathered on the horizon, including increased prices and armed conflicts in Europe.

Despite these recent challenges, we have observed increasing activity among Pharmacolog customers due to the demand from authorities in Europe and the US for safe handling and preparation of pharmaceuticals in hospital wards and hospital pharmacies. The directives state that any aseptic production of medicines is to take place in accordance with good manufacturing practice (GMP). GMP always includes a quality step to check the final product, so-called Quality Control. Today, the quality control system at hospitals and hospital pharmacies is not sufficiently developed for the preparation of medicines. With the stricter requirements from the authorities, the need for solutions has increased. Our systems DrugLog™ and PrepLog™ can help all pharmaceutical bodies comply with the stricter regulations.

Last year we doubled our installed base and now have more than 50 systems installed in clinical use. This is the result of a combination of targeted sales operations from both our direct sales resources and our strategic partners.

This increased demand also reveals itself in our list of sales leads. Our numbers from 2021 provide evidence: Last year we doubled our installed base and now have more than 50 systems installed in clinical use. This is the result of a combination of targeted sales operations from both our direct sales resources and our strategic partners.

To further help our customers develop their compounding routines we have developed Pharmacolog Dashboard™, which we introduced in March at the annual EAHP Congress in Vienna. Pharmacolog Dashboard™ is a web-based tool for monitoring and analyzing completed drug preparation measurements from a remote location. The idea is that, together with DrugLog™, PrepLog™ and WasteLog™, Pharmacolog Dashboard™ will provide an overview of the hospital’s quality controls in order to maximize patient safety and minimize the risk of narcotic drugs falling into the wrong hands. Pharmacolog Dashboard™ attracted a great deal of interest at the EAHP Congress. Understandably, being able to get a comprehensive overview of the quality control work related to the preparation of important medication makes it much easier for pharmacists working in hospital pharmacies.

This year, Pharmacolog has also taken another exciting step in a project that aims to monitor antibiotic levels in blood. For many years, Pharmacolog has been part of a development collaboration with the Department of Surgical Sciences and the Department of Medical Sciences at Uppsala University. The collaboration develops methods and technology for bedside determination of the antibiotic concentration in the blood of patients who are undergoing treatment for severe infection. The goal is to use Pharmacolog’s unique spectroscopic technology to measure antibiotic levels in separated blood plasma. Recently, we began a second phase in this development collaboration and expanded it to include measurements at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö. The purpose of this second phase is to validate measurement results produced in a clinical environment using Pharmacolog’s technology.

Methods and tools designed to reduce the risk of incorrect medication are needed now more than ever, and the demand for products that can perform quick quality control of prepared medication is ever increasing. With proven, effective, and well-functioning solutions, Pharmacolog is leading the way forward.

We are now entering the summer season and hope everyone can take some time off and recharge their batteries. There is still much work to be done and here at Pharmacolog, we expect a busy and exciting second half of this year.

Stay safe.
